Points and strength order at a glance

Point value and trick-taking strength are related but not identical. The five highest ranks score points; the other five can still win when their suit or the trump situation makes them strongest.

Why the deck totals 120 points

Each suit contains 30 points: 11 for the ace, 10 for the three, 4 for the king, 3 for the knight and 2 for the jack. Four suits multiplied by 30 produce the 120 points available in a complete hand.

Strength is not the printed number

The three is the second-strongest card, above the king, even though its printed number is lower than the face cards. The two is the weakest card. Learn the rank order rather than comparing the numbers printed on the cards.

Zero-point cards still matter

A seven, six, five, four or two adds no points when counted, but it can protect a valuable card, draw out a trump or win a trick of its own. A low trump still beats an ace from another suit.

A quick counting example

A pile containing two aces, one three, a king and a jack is worth 38 points: 22 + 10 + 4 + 2. The remaining zero-point cards in that pile do not change the total, although they may explain how those scoring cards were captured.
